When someone declines

Updated 10 October 2026

A signer can decline instead of signing and tell you why. The document closes for everyone and you are told straight away, with the quickest way to put it right.

What you see

You get an email and a notification, and the document shows Declined in your list with a Fix it button. On the document page a panel shows who declined, the reason they picked and any note they added. The reasons are:

  • Something in it needs to change.
  • I’m not the right person to sign.
  • I don’t agree with it.
  • I don’t know this sender.
  • Another reason.

Putting it right

The panel suggests the right next step for their reason, and all three are always there:

  • Upload a corrected PDF: choose the new file. The people and fields carry over to a new draft. If the new file has fewer pages, fields on missing pages are dropped, and you are told how many.
  • Send to someone else: makes a new draft where the person who declined is replaced by an empty placeholder. Add the right person’s name and email, then send.
  • Edit and send again: makes a new draft exactly as it was, for you to change and send.
  • Reply to the signer opens an email to them, if you’d like to talk first.

The declined document stays closed as a record, linked to the new version so you can always see what happened.

If they didn’t know who you were

A signer who picks “I don’t know this sender” can also ask not to receive documents through Docket Secure from anyone. If they do, you can’t send to that address again. Make sure people expect your document, and use your full name in your account so they recognise it.
